in hong kong

Finally got into hong kong last night after an endless standby in Beijing Airport (which has got nothing, was very hot and no wi-fi access). Quick recap of the trip so far:

Tokyo: Same old, the highlight was a blooming cherry bloosm :D. The entire Ueno Park was covered with white cherry bloosm tree and it was a delight. Other than that we only ate and walked around Tokyo, nothing special. Word of advice: DO NOT go for the tour at the Tokyo Imperial Palace. It was nothing like the one in Kyoto and was a complete waste of my morning.

Beijing: A much nicer and cleaner city than I had imagined. Went to The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Template of Heaven and the Tiananmen Square and was impressed by how nice each of them was. The only down side was the food, we had great expectation of the Peking Duck and the lamb hot pot but both of them turned out to be a huge disappointment and we had to resort to KFC/McDonalds and etc...

And in hong kong at the moment. Flights back to Sydney isn't looking very well at the moment but I shall see...

A330-200 Inspection

Went out to Sydney International Terminal today for an inspection on our new A330-200 aircraft. I was gonna be the photographer on this trip but then my camera decided to play up. It was working fine on our bus trip over to the terminal and I was even able to snap a few photos on the tarmac while we were waiting for someone to swipe us into the aerobridge..

Once we started moving my camera decided to just die and refused to capture anymore image (the lens wouldn't take any picture -_-....). Tried numerous time to restart the camera and reset that but no hope at all. In the end on the aircraft I had to resort to using the crappy camera on my phone (but of course the quality is really really crappy) but at least we've got the job done. Seems that I'd really need to research on new camera asap and get a replacement because I can't stand the idea of having no camera when I go on trips and so....

The aircraft was overall quite nice and the pitch on the Crew rest seats were enormous! Let's see whether I'd have any luck to fly on this aircraft on my trip up to NRT later in March..... The rest of the day was just routine and to deal with the quarter report for leading indicator. Can't wait till Thursday when I'd start doing trips again so hopefully I'd get to pick up some new work up there (and hopefully try to fix the evil car park...).

Goals for 2008

After reviewing my progress for 2007, it is time to set some new goals for this coming year:

1. Travel! - I've been "trapped" in Australia and Sydney for too long with all my residency and work stuff and I think I really need to get out a bit more this year. Other than my usual duty travel trips up to Brisbane and Cairns throughout the year, I'm hoping that I'd get to have some duty travel trips out to more interesting places but I guess that's out of my control for now. I have already have a few trips planned for this year as follow:

March - Japan (Tokyo or Kyoto) and Hong Kong (finally!)

July (or September) - Italy (Rome, Florence/Pisa, Milan, Venice)

December - Beijing (and Hong Kong?)

All these trips are pending whether I can take leave and get onto the flights (since I'd be doing staff travel). Other than all these there could also be occasional short trips to places like Melbourne, NZ or other places depending on how I can fit them in.

2. Career!! - Now that I've got a pretty good job which allows me to learn quite a lot I'm not intending to change job anytime soon (but I wouldn't mind a promotion or pay rise... lol!), however it is not really my intention to dedicate my entire career on OH&S so I think I'd need to start figure out what kind of area I'd like to get into next and be prepared for that. And of course, I'm still going to do 200% on my current job as I always do!

3. Studies! - I'd be starting my postgraduate studies in Safety Science/OHS Management in March 2008 in UNSW (initially as a Graduate Certificate). I hope I would be able to juggle in all my duty travel trips ok to do my studies. I am aiming to complete the certificate level within 1 year (the recommended time for part-time studies) and determine whether I would like to progress on and go onto the Diploma or Masters level. I'm already enrolled for March and fingers crossed on my studies!

4. Save up - Now that with my higher pay I am hoping to save up a bit more money (either to get property, investment or whatsoever) but with my studies (which is full fee!!! damn it!) and travel I don't think I'd be able to achieve too much this year. I think I'd need to cut down on non-essential stuff (like eating out less) gradually this year in order to do that but I'd do my best.

5. Exercise - I think it is time for me to do more exercises (with my diet and other stuff, I think I'd die if I don't do more exercises) but with my tight schedule it is sometimes difficult to do so. Hoping to get something that I can at least do at home regularly (so I'd feel less guilty at least). I've already bought a pair of dumbbell but I really need to force myself to start exercising this year!

And I think that's it for me for now. Let's see how I'd go with these items next year!
